Here's is that hair tutorial I promised from this post.

I've been slowly getting my new apartment in order.  I'm not satisfied with it just yet, but a few minor changes should do the trick. This antique desk was my first and ultimately most beloved purchase for the new space. I think it compliments my striped wall and framed LIFE magazines really well.
Did you notice that even my ice cubes are fancy today? I like to make them feel special by dressing them up with wildflowers and berries. It's made my switch from Diet Coke to water a little less daunting.

I want to stress the "helped style" part, our stylist did most of the work.

Hearts on Fire + Bokeh Filter DIY

Happy 4th of July!

Create your own Hearts on Fire fireworks with this easy Bokeh Filter.

Materials:

Black stock paper - we used a black postcard

Exacto Knife

Best with 55mm or 50mm lens

Directions:

1. Cut the stock into a circle the exact size of your lens.

 The circle should fit right inside the lens.

2. Use an exacto knife to cut out a small shape in the middle. We've done hearts, stars, lighting blots, bowler hats, snowflakes etc. Simpler designs work best.

3. Fit the filter inside your lens. Set your your focus to manual and adjust the focus until the lights turn into your filter shape. Works best at night.

Braided Scarf Tutorial

 Re-posting the Braided Scarf Tutorial we did for the Ruche blog.

(sweater-Threadsence, scarf-Ruche)

Step 1
Brush all of your hair to one side and separate into 2 sections.

Step 2
Take a small strand from one of the sections and tie the end of your scarf around the strand.

Step 3
Using the scarf as the 3d section, braid your hair as usual.

Step 4
 Tie the remainder of the scarf around the ends of your hair and secure with a hair tie.

That's all there's to it. Easy.

Feather Headpiece DIY

Pheasant feathers really have an autumnal wood nymph quality that I simply adore. I was hunting around my local JoAnn Fabrics when I found the perfect feathery pieces for my creations.

What you'll need: one feather strip, one feather piece, black elastic, black velvet ribbon, aligator clip, scissors and a glue gun. I found both feather pieces in the mask making section....Feather clip:


Step 1: make a simple bow from velvet ribbon.

Step 2: glue velvet bow to the bottom of the feather piece.

Step 3: glue alligator clip to back of the feather piece. Done....Feather headband:


Step 1: measure headpiece and the amount of elastic needed. Glue elastic to the inside ends of the piece.

Step 2: glue velvet ribbon around the ends of the piece to finish off. Done.

Both are so very easy!...Do you think you'll give them a try?

An ineffective D.I.Y. dye

I found this great 80's shirt dress at a vintage shop up north. The only hitch was that I didn't like its bubble gum pink color. I bought some dye at the local JoAnn Fabrics, hoping to change it to a lovely shade of wine. Yeah, not so much. It's now more of a raspberry. Since the shirt is 65% polyester and 35% cotton, the poly keeps it from absorbing the dye. I want to try again and really soak it for a good long time. Anyone have any advice?

Before: bubble gum pink. After: raspberry pink.

I definitely recommend using rubber gloves and a 5 gallon bucket.

You can see the different shades. The pink buttons are the original shade and the foam from the shoulder pad is the shade I was hoping to achieve- a nice deep wine.

...Hopefully the second time will work some magic.

DIY: Check Chair Cushion

Here's a quick little makeover I did on my two Ikea Stefan kitchen chairs...


1. Supplies: two foam cushions, cabin check Country Curtains fabric (about 1.5 yds), staple gun and screw driver.
2. Cut corners on the back of cushion to fit chair seat. Repeat on other side.

3. Measure fabric over cushion allowing enough fabric to tuck under seat.
4. Unscrew seat from chair.

5. Use measured fabric as guide for additional chairs.
6. Use cut foam as guide for additional chairs.

7. Staple the fabric to bottom of seat. Or use upholstery tacks and hammer.
8. Screw seat back on chair.

As a bonus, I used the additional check fabric to cover the window seat cushion that came with the house. Since we're renting, I didn't want anything permanent and just cut the fabric to size and tucked into place...
...TGIF!

DIY: Strawberry Ice Cream

This is a very simple recipe that I found in Good Housekeeping mag and then slightly modified.

Ingredients:
1lb of frozen strawberries, slightly thawed.
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup plain Greek yogurt (I only used three 5.3 oz containers)

Step 1: Blend 1 cup of strawberries in a food processor. It helps if the strawberries are slightly thawed, which I didn't do at first but highly recommend.

Step 2: Transfer berries to a large metal bowl.

Step 3: In food processor, puree yogurt, sugar and vanilla.

Step 4: Add remaining (slightly thawed) strawberries.

Step 5: Transfer to bowl with strawberries; stir well till blended.

Step 6: Freeze for one hour until firm. This time may vary depending on freezer temperatures. Mine took about two hours and I stirred it every 45 minutes.

Step 7: Enjoy!
It really is quite delicious and much more healthy than regular ice cream.
