Minnesota State Fair

Last Monday, Cole, Erin and I went to the Minnesota State Fair. I've been once before when I was a surly sixteen year old, but couldn't remember much. I'm not usually a crowd-loving person and tend to feel claustrophobic and typically start speed walking like I'm trying to win a foot race, but, with a few reminders from Cole and Erin to slow down, I managed to keep myself under control. The fair was what I imagined it to be: crowded, crazy and fun. We ate cheese curds, meat sticks, apple cider freezes, grilled corn and cotton candy. Once we hit the fine arts building I was already sick of walking and twisted Cole's arm to take the sky glider back to the Agriculture building, where we saw stunning dahlias and amazing seed art.

...How was your weekend? Did you do anything fun? On Saturday, Cole and I spent a good chunk of the day attempting to make our garage look less like an episode of Hoarders. We were able to take a bunch of boxes to the recycling center and in the early evening began painting Immy!! Yesterday, I went thrifting with Erin and hit the jackpot. I'm hoping to reopen my vintage shop within the next month!! iPhone Photos: Mill City Museum

Knowing that Cole and I would use it a ton, I recently purchased a Minnesota Historical Society household membership. There are a few historical sites/museums that are free with the membership, so we decided to check out the first one on our list- the Mill City Museum. We first noticed the mill on the previous weekend's river boat cruise and I just loved the dilapidated look of the partially burnt-down back building. The tour was quite interesting and started with a 19 minute movie all about Minneapolis. Next we took a Flour Tower ride that took us up and down on an elevator with mill sets and video and audio clips from old mill workers. The elevator dropped us off on the conservatory deck that gave us a lovely panoramic view of the Stone Arch bridge and St. Anthony Falls below.











After walking around the Mill Ruin Park and walking across the bridge, we hopped in our car and headed back to Nicollet Island, where we enjoyed a lovely view from an old metal bridge. We even got to see a horse-drawn carriage from the Nicollet Island Inn. After leaving the island we stumbled upon the Northeast Polish festival. Having a bit of polish blood coursing through my veins, I had to stop and get some food. The event was near closing by the time we got there and every stall was out of beer, but I snagged some pierogi for myself and kielbasa for Cole and proceeded to dip my left shirt pocket in a dollop of sour cream (after much soaking, the sour cream stain is almost out of my silk shirt). All in all, a wonderful way to pass a Sunday!

Nicollet Island

On Sunday, Cole and I took a cruise down the Mississippi River. I can't say that the cruise was all that cool, well maybe the St. Anthony Falls lock was pretty cool, but otherwise it was a bit boring. After the cruise, we drove over to Nicollet Island and took some photos. Let me tell you, Nicollet Island is one of my new favorite spots in Minneapolis. Walking down the few little streets makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. I was completely smitten and didn't want to leave, but Cole had a plane to Seattle to catch, so we picked the prettiest spot and snapped away. Cole gets home on Friday and I've missed him terribly, but I've been hanging out with Annie and Erin which helps keep the loneliness away. On Monday we met up with Emma for drinks at Sweeney's which has an awesome back patio and yesterday we took some photos of each other at a pretty spot off the Mississippi River Blvd. I should hopefully be posting those photos tomorrow or Friday...fingers crossed.

Summit Avenue

This post was planned for Monday of this week and it's now Friday, so needless to say, I'm a bit behind. Last Saturday, Cole and I took a historical tour of Saint Paul's illustrious Summit Avenue (thanks for the suggestion, Erin!). It was a hot, humid and muggy day for a walk, but the interesting architecture and history of the houses made up for our discomfort. I took all but one of the photos (I'm sure you can guess which one) and was acting like an annoying tourist, snapping away at anything that caught my eye. After taking almost eighty photos, I whittled it down to my favorites, which are still a lot...sorry!

iPhone Photos: An afternoon in Stillwater, MN

After spending Sunday afternoon doing yard work, Cole and I decided to take a little jaunt to Stillwater, MN. I've been wanting to go for ages and sadly we picked a bad weekend since it was their annual Lumberjack Days (not as cool as it sounds). Anyway, we were still able to see the town and eat at a fun little diner that had delicious cheese curds, hamburgers and malts. I could seriously live in Stillwater with its steep hills that overlook the St. Croix river and charming town and I even found my house of dreams that we could totally afford if it wasn't a longer commute for Cole...
